Vast areas in Barpeta district submerged

BARPETA, June 14 � The overall flood situation in Barpeta district has remained stable for the last three days. No report of fresh breach of embankments and dykes was reported from any part of the district in the last 72 hours. However, flood water has submerged vast areas in the district.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority about 1.20 lakh people belonging to 227 villages in different revenue circles in the district have been affected till now. Out of these the worst affected area is Sarthebari revenue circle where 55 villages have been affected.

In Sarthebari revenue circle, several tributaries of Brahmaputra like Tihu, Kaldia, Burhadia and Pahimara have created havoc by breaching the embankments and dykes in various locations and have snapped the road communication. About 75,000 villagers have been affected. Though the flood in the area is stable, several villages are still reeling under flood waters. Eight houses were washed away by Tihu river at Khaira village and the displaced families have been rehabilitated by the administration at alternative places.

The agriculture sector suffered a major setback in the district in the current wave of floods. According to preliminary estimates, 1,11,900 people of 764 villages have suffered due to inundation of the croplands. 11,924 hectares of eri, 1,000 hectares of ahu and 1,229 hectares of boro varieties have been destroyed.
