KAZIRANGA, June 23 - As a part of pre-monsoon preventive measures against the spread of dreadful diseases, the Kaziranga National Park authority along with state veterinary units have been carrying out vaccination drive of domestic animals, including cattle and livestock belonging to fringe area villages in Kaziranga since Sunday last.
Informing this Correspondent, the Divisional Forest Officer of Kaziranga National Park under Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Rohini Saikia said that every year the park authority conducts vaccination against some dreaded diseases so that they do not spread in the core habitat of wildlife in Kaziranga National Park.
�The effort is to prevent spread of infection among wild animals. This is an annual pre-monsoon preventive measure,� DFO Saikia reiterated.
Veterianarian Dr P Kakoti, who is involved in the vaccination programme, said that fringe area villages in all the ranges of Kaziranga National Park were being covered under this vaccination drive.
He informed that vaccine Rakhak Trio (trivalent vaccine) was being administered to the domestic animals in the fringe villages to prevent the spread of epidemics like Black Quarter (BQ), Foot and Mouth Disease (F and D) and Haemorragic Septecimia (HS) to the wild animals from the domesticated ones.
The vaccination programme is being carried out with active collaboration of WWF India, WTI, Bhumi and The Corbett Foundation.
Dr Kakoti informed that many areas like Bhakat Sapori, Gabhoru Sapori, Sohola Sapori on the eastern side of Kaziranga followed by Bagori, Kuthori, Deopani Baghmari in western range are being covered by the said vaccination programme.
In Kohora range, the vaccination drive was carried out at Bezgoan, Mazgoan, Sildubi and No. 1 Kohora. The vaccination drive, which is a pre-monsoon preventive measure against the harmful diseases, would continue till Wednesday, said Dr Kakoti. This is expected to greatly reduce mortality of the animals and livestock during the monsoon season.
