Use of school field as paddy seed bed opposed

By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, July 18 - Sports lovers and student bodies of Nitaipukhuri have strongly opposed the Thowra MLAs bid to use the Nitaipukhuri HS School field as a seed bed for paddy saplings to be supplied to cultivators for plantation in paddy fields ravaged by the floods in Bokota and Nitai Panidihing mouzas.

It may be mentioned here that former Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain donated a substantial amount while present BJP MLA Kushal Duwori had granted Rs 20 lakh for developing the field as a sports complex, but allegedly due to rampant corruption, the works have remained incomplete and are of abysmally low quality.

Khirod Gogoi, secretary of the Nitaipukhuri Sports Association, sportsperson Diganta Handique, Jitumoni Gogoi, former president of the Nita-Panidihing AASU unit, sportsperson Mukut Gogoi, Sunit Phulkonwar, adviser of ATASU, Nitaipukhuri unit and many others have strongly opposed any move to use the only playground in the area for agricultural purposes and urged the parties concerned and the principal of the school to preserve it as a playground only.

The Nitaipukhuri AASU unit submitted a memorandum signed by president Chinmoy Pratim Bora and secretary Chandan Baruah to the SMDC Niatipukhuri HS against using the field as a seed bed.

However, former student leader and BJP worker Munin Dihingia said that thousands of paddy cultivators are in dire need of Kathia (paddy saplings) now after their cultivation was wiped out by floods. The school field lying unused during these rainy days can be utilised meaningfully for the survival of the poor cultivators and hence there is no harm if it is temporarily used as a seed bed.
