Use of Dutch tech for river management stressed

GUWAHATI, Dec 12 - The Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (FINER) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands and Dutch company Arcadis organised a seminar on �Holistic River Basin Management� on Monday.

It was inaugurated by Netherlands Ambassador Alphonsus Stoelinga. State Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta was the guest of honour. FINER president Pabitra Buragohain gave the welcome address.

Both the Dutch envoy and Mahanta emphasised that discussions are going on between the Dutch and Assam governments on developing the rivers of Assam for the State�s overall benefits. Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal took part in the discussion as special guest. The seminar covered issues like floods, river transportation and the Guwahati smart city project, and explored possibilities of using Dutch technology in these areas.

The seminar was attended by Prasanta Dutta, Additional Chief Engineer, Water Resources Department, Prof Nayan Sharma, IIT, Roorkee, Dr Pankaj Baruah, Director, North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management, Bharat Bhusan Devchowdhury, Director, Inland Water Transport and others.

Academicians from engineering colleges, universities, senior government officials and industry representatives also attended the seminar.
