GUWAHATI, Aug 23 - An uproarious situation developed at Betkuchi by the national highway today after an oil tanker driver was allegedly beaten up by policemen, resulting in tanker drivers blocking the road and a lathicharge and blank firing by the police.
A tanker driver, who had parked his vehicle on the roadside, was allegedly beaten up by two policemen. Following that, several drivers of oil and gas tankers reached the spot and started a protest, demanding action against the policemen. They blocked a section of the road, which led to massive congestion for some time.
Police personnel from Gorchuk PS reached the spot and tried to disperse the protesters. The agitating drivers pelted stones at the police and also damaged a police van.
Police resorted to lathicharge and fired one round in the air, said a police official, adding that they were able to break up the protest in less than half an hour. Meanwhile, the driver who was allegedly beaten up by the policemen, was given treatment at a city hospital.
