GUWAHATI, Aug 7 In view of the prevailing situation in the State and the forthcoming Independence Day celebrations, all passenger trains from Upper Assam are expected to be run in convoys up to Guwahati till August 15.
According to sources in Northeast Frontier Railway, while the situation in Karbi Anglong district has improved since yesterday, the railway authorities are in no mood to take any chance. However, outbound trains will run individually from Guwahati onwards.
Both long-distance and inter-city trains coming from Dibrugarh and other places in Upper Assam would be clubbed in convoys of 3-5 trains at a time. Each convoy would be escorted by a pilot engine or good trains, with security personnel.
This procedure was adopted late last week for security reasons after the flare-up of violence in Karbi Anglong and is expected to be continued till Independence Day.
However, convoy operation would entail some delay in arrival of trains in Guwahati and their departure to other States.
Meanwhile, train service in the Lumding-Silchar segment is back to normal since yesterday, the sources added.
