North Lakhimpur, Jan 24: Eminent playwright and theatre personality Sebabrata Baruah passed away this morning at Guwahati Medical College Hospital following a prolonged illness. He was 72.

Born in Jorhat, Baruah started writing dramas in his school days at Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district, and went on to become one of the most outstanding writers of plays in amateur theatre before entering the world of mobile theatre.

He was awarded with Swabhab Shilpi Amulya Kakati Award in 2014 and Dalmia Cement Mobile Theatre Award in 2019.

His mortal remains were brought to Bihpuria in the evening and after a public tribute was cremated in his native village in Gosani Pathar.

Baruah leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter. His death has been widely mourned in the district.

Among others, his demise was condoled by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and the All Guwahati Students’ Union.

In a condolence message, Chief Minister Sonowal said, “Baruah’s contribution to the field of mobile theatre will be remembered. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Assamese society.”
