Unmanned level crossings in NFR eliminated

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 13 - Maligaon-headquartered Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) today said that it has eliminated all unmanned level crossings across the zone.

NFR has taken a quantum jump towards safety by eliminating all unmanned level crossings through various means, said an official statement.

It said that as on April 1 this year, a total of 151 unmanned level crossings existed in the NFR zone. Out of them, 136 have been eliminated by converting them to manned crossings, 10 were eliminated by construction of road under bridges and five were closed down.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier directed all the zones to eliminate unmanned level crossings by March 31, 2019.

...NFR becomes one of the first railways to achieve this target ahead of the stipulated time. Unmanned level crossings are considered one of the weakest links in the safety preparedness of Indian Railway as a considerable percentage of accidents have occurred due to carelessness of road users at these unguarded crossings. This is the reason why NFR had targeted the elimination of unmanned level crossings on mission mode, the statement said.
