GUWAHATI, Nov 10 -�Rajkumar Meghen alias Sanayaima, the chairman of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF), was released from the Guwahati Central Jail on Saturday after serving a 10-year imprisonment.
The UNLF chief was booked and subsequently convicted in 2016 along with 17 others under several sections of the law including Section 121-A of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to waging war against the Government of India.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Meghan in 2010.�The NIA subsequently submitted two chargesheets in the case, charging 25 persons, of which 18 accused faced trial, while the remaining seven are still absconding.
A Special NIA court found Meghen and 17 other accused guilty under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the IPC.
Meghen, according to sources, was received by his son and his lawyer outside the jail premises on Saturday. He later left for Imphal. Gunedhor Moiragthem, advocate of Meghen, confirmed the development and told The Assam Tribune that another UNLF cadre would be released from the Guwahati Central Jail on November 14. �Some of them had appealed before the higher court and their case is still pending,� he said.
A few others, including a woman cadre, have already been released after completion of their respective terms. Although his jail term was supposed to end, the duration was remitted due to his good conduct inside the jail.
