Unknown disease claims 7 in west Karbi Anglong

DIPHU, June 15 - In all, seven people along with women and children died after being struck by a mysterious disease within a span of 28 days in Kamarpha and Rongjangphong village in Duar Amla locality of West Karbi Anglong district.

Doctors and health officials have till date failed to detect the exact cause of deaths though similar sickness has gripped more persons in both the villages. The concerned villagers and kin of the deceased have told local mediapersons that the victims developed syndromes like loose motion, headache and high fever before succumbing to the unknown ailment.

Local political leader Probhat Chandra Taro in the meantime visited the affected villages to take stock of the situation and directed the medical team to do their best.

General people of the locality have expressed apprehension lest the unknown epidemic spreads and claims more lives.

Condemned: Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Wednesday staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the SDO (Civil) office premises and vehemently condemned the Chaygaon incident of June 5, where a troupe of female artistes were compelled to perform vulgar dance items by stripping at a cultural night organised to celebrate Eid by the organisers along with a group of perverted audience.

The agitating AJYCP members described the incident as absolutely reprehensible and condemned it at the same time. They subsequently dashed off a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the SDO (Civil) at Bokajan and demanded arrest and exemplary punishment to the culprits, besides ensuring that such incidents do not recur in future, at least in Assam.
