University teacher held on molestation charges

KOKRAJHAR, Nov 24 - In a major development, Kokrajhar Police last night arrested an associate professor, Sanswrang Mushahary, of the Bodoland University in connection with the alleged molestation of girl students of the Economics Department of the university. A case (No. 655/2016 under Sections 354A/376//511 of the IPC) has been registered in this regard, said Srijit T, Additional SP, Kokrajhar.

The arrested university teacher, who is also the head of the Department of Economics and the principal in-charge of the Music and Fine Arts College, Kokrajhar, was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Kokrajhar, today. CJM Nasim Akhtar sent the accused to 14-day judicial custody, rejecting his bail petition.

Meanwhile, the Bodoland University authorities have suspended Mushahary with immediate effect till the inquiry into the case is completed.

The All Bodo Students� Union (ABSU) and several other student organisations are demanding strict action against the accused.

It may be mentioned here that several students of the university yesterday lodged an FIR at the Kokrajhar Police Station against the associate professor. More than 17 students and members of the student union of the Bodoland University gave a written statement to the Vice Chancellor and the women�s cell against Mushahary. They also staged a protest and a gherao programme at the Department of Economics, demanding stern action against the accused associate professor.
