Unit 2 of Kameng power plant commissioned

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, July 1 - Close on the heels of successful commissioning of an 150-MW unit about a fortnight back, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) has started commercial operation of Unit-2 of its 600 (4x150) MW Kameng Hydro Electric Plant (HEP) in West Kameng district on Monday.

NEEPCO started commercial operation of 150-MW Unit-2 of its 600-MW Kameng HEP in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, after demonstrating peaking capability corresponding to the installed capacity through a successful trial run on June 29. With this, 300 MW (two units) of the plant has been commissioned which will promote desired changes to the energy mix of the country, stated a press release here today. On June 17, one unit of the Kameng HEP was commissioned for commercial operation.

The Kameng HEP is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme where regulated water from the Bichom (5.72 MCM live storage) and Tenga (0.17 MCM live storage) reservoirs is conveyed through a 14.5-km water conductor system to drive four units of 150 MW each.

The beginning of operations of this project is a testimony to the NEEPCOs commitment to generate electric energy and harness the vast power potential of the North East despite various hurdles faced, given the remoteness of the location and especially in unprecedented and trying circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the commissioning of this unit, NEEPCO reaffirms its commitment of providing uninterrupted power supply required for the development of the country in general and the North Eastern region in particular, the press release added.
