By Correspondent

NAMRUP, April 1 The joint council of officers, BVFCL and Namrup Fertilizer Shramik Union (NFSU) have expressed their satisfaction over the approval of the much-awaited final revamp cost of Rs 635.35 crore for the Namrup Fertilizer Revamp Project of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd, by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in its meeting held on March 19, in New Delhi.

BVFCL, Namrup, is a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the administrative control of deptt of Fertilizers (DOF), Govt of India and formed after the bifurcation of the erstwhile HFCL with effect from January 1, 2002. The revival and revamp jobs of the plants had been carried out with the revival package of Rs 350 crore and scheduled to be completed within 30 months from the zero date of November 2, 1998 to May 1, 2001. But due to some reasons the partial revamp jobs of Namrup plant had been completed and commissioned on March 25, 2002 while Namrup II on March 25,2005, with a total cost of Rs 635.35 crore, owing to cost escalation. This revised cost estimate II of Namrup Revamp Project had lingered on the threshold of receiving approval and clearance from CCEA since then. At last in the last CCEA meet held on March 19, the said approval and clearance came, bringing great relief to the BVFCL family. NFSU and JCO activists role in this respect cant be ignored.

Tileswar Bora, general secretary, NFSU, told The Assam Tribune here that, he along with group of delegates met Union Minister for Mines & DoNER BK Handique during his recent visit to Dibrugarh and held discussions with him regarding the problems that have gripped the BVFCL, Namrup, the lone and largest gas-based fertilizer complex of the entire NER. The said discussions chiefly centred around setting up a new fertilizer plant in the name and style of Namrup IV, considering the viability of Namrup I, II & III as committed by the then Union Minister for Steel, Chemicals & Fertilizers during his visit to Namrup on June 26, 2006.

BK Handique informed the delegates that in the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) meet held on March 19 last, the said issue was brought to the notice of almost all the Cabinet ministers, including Prime Minister. Finance Minister, Home Minister and they in turn issued a green signal. The Cabinet Minister-further assured the delegates to take fruitful steps to switch off the problems of BVFCL, Namrup.

NFSU delegates too offered their sincere gratitude to the Cabinet Minister for his efforts for greater good of BVFCL.
