MANGALDAI, Jan 18 - Ajay Tamta, Union Minister of State for Textiles, during his visit to Assam on Tuesday afternoon met a couple of beneficiaries of Centrally-sponsored sericulture schemes in remote villages of Darrang and tried to know their grievances regarding proper outcome of the scheme.
He visited several mulberry plantations in villages like Bamunjhar, Hengalpara and Haldha on the northwestern corner of the district, the area considered to have high potential for traditional mulberry cultivation.
The minister was accompanied by Mangaldai Lok Sabha MP Ramen Deka, Sipajhar LAC MLA Binanda Kr Saikia, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman and senior officials of both Central and State Sericulture Departments.
During the interaction, the farmers apprised the minister about several problems, including lack of irrigation facilities and need of galvanized fencing for protection against cattle. The minister assured the farmers of addressing their grievances at the earliest.
Talking to media, the minister expressed his happiness to see farmers earning more and more every passing year from mulberry farming which is done more than once in a year.
