IMPHAL, Nov 11 - Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan today reviewed the COVID-19 situation in Manipur through a video conference with Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other State officials. Speaking at the video conference, Biren Singh thanked the Central Government for extending all possible help to the State in combating the pandemic in the past 10 months.

The Chief Minister said that the mortality rate is slowly coming down and a technical expert committee has been formed to look into this aspect. He claimed that Manipur was doing well in containing the virus. Maintaining that the testing rate has improved and that 3,72,000 samples have been tested so far, the Chief Minister said that the current testing rate per day per million population of Manipur is quite higher than the national average.

Informing that the State is focusing on imparting awareness at the grassroot level to reduce the transmission rate, Biren Singh said village-level committees have been formed, and local clubs, organisations, NGOs, etc. have been roped in to get them involved in creating awareness to make people follow the standard operating procedures strictly.

The main objective of the initiative is to speed up the Jan Andolan campaign against COVID-19 and promote the COVID Appropriate Behaviour.

The Chief Minister requested the Union Minister to permit flexibility in fund utilisation so that the RIMS Hospital may meet urgent needs and cope up with challenges that have emerged in combating the virus. Biren Singh also invited the Union minister to the golden jubilee celebration of the RIMS to be held next year. He requested Vardhan to entrust the responsibility of construction of the National Centre for Disease Control with the State Government.
