NEW DELHI, June 6 - The Union Cabinet was today apprised of the progress report of the Special Committee for Inter-Linking of Rivers.
The Himalayan component of the interlinking of rivers concerning Assam includes the Manas-Sankosh-Tista-Ganga (M-S-T-G) link, also involving West Bengal, Bihar and Bhutan. The interlinking will benefit Assam, West Bengal and Bihar with irrigation facilities benefitting 3.9 lakh hectares in Assam, besides generating 5,287 MW hydropower. The report said that pre-feasibility report has been completed.
The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given the river-interlinking progress report in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling. The top court had directed the Government of India to constitute a �Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers� and a periodical report is required to be submitted to the Cabinet on the progress made by the panel.
The status report of the Special Committee on Interlinking of Rivers consists of substantial progress made in three priority links � Ken-Betwa Link, Damanganga-Pinjal Link and Para-Tapi-Narmada Link, besides other Himalayan and Peninsular links, identified as per the National Perspective Plan of 1980, official sources said.
