GUWAHATI, Nov 28 - The State government today said it will keep a tab on government educational institutions to ensure that they do not observe holidays on particular days unilaterally and without permission from the authorities.

Minister for Finance and Education Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it has come to light that teachers of some high madrassas in certain districts observe holidays on Friday, despite the fact that Sunday is the official weekly holiday in India.

They cannot do so on their own. We cannot have two laws in the same country. We have to follow Indian laws and the legal system. Or else they should approach the Central government to get the rule changed, Sarma said, adding that he himself was not earlier aware that such things are happening.

He said it is not a matter of targeting any particular community but of following the law. This is applicable to all, irrespective of religion, caste or creed, he said.

Sarma added that such schools, as well as other institutions and offices, are given one or one and a half hours of free time each Friday for offering Friday namaz.
