DHUBRI, March 14 - Although the people of Dhubri have sent many representatives to the Centre since Independence with high hopes, the bordering district still remains backward in many sectors and their basic demands still remain unaddressed.
Voters from different areas of Dhubri stated that problems like lack of educational infrastructure, erosion, rising unemployment, underdeveloped medical facilities, rise in drug abuse and crimes and population explosion have not yet been addressed by the government.
People here alleged that the pace of implementation of different development schemes in the district is also very slow. Voters in the district believe that they are being used as �vote banks� and not as citizens who need help from the government.
BN College�s former principal Prof G Goswami said, �Our political leaders hardly talk about establishment of proper educational facilities and, as a result, we remain far behind.�
He further said that the district has no young leaders who can guide the people towards choosing right candidates and make people conscious about their rights.
Hemen Chakravarty, State president (i/c) of AJYCP and a resident here, believes that the politicians in the district are not progressive in nature. �The main issue for the ensuing Lok Sabha election should be the development of the district in all spheres.�
Aminul Islam, secretary of the Dhubri BAR Association, stated that the basic problems affecting the district have remained the same since Independence. �Every year, hundreds of acres of land are lost due to erosion. Schools and public health centres are washed away due to erosion. But nothing has been done by successive governments to solve it,� added the senior advocate.
�Every year during the elections, we see the real issues are pushed under the carpet and irrelevant matters become the deciding factor,� said Ashok Bhattacharjee, a retired government official.
