Unclean Silchar displeases CM

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, Oct 20 - Despite much ado over cleanliness triggered across the second biggest urban sprawl in the State, Silchar has registered a disappointing performance in the Swachhata Survekshan rankings, said local MLA Dilip Kumar Paul.

Conveying the discontent expressed by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal over the dismal situation, Paul, while delivering his speech at the Durga Puja awards ceremony organised by Cachar district administration here on Sunday, said that there is a lot left to be done in order to put up better performance at the national level regarding Swachhata.

Of the 425 cities taken under the Swachhata Survekshan fold this year, Silchar had ranked 423rd which has displeased even the Chief Minister. He had conveyed his disappointment and asked us to work together to improve the conditions. The steps taken by the Cachar District Administration in reducing river pollution during Durga Puja is commendable and we must all work in cohesion to achieve the goals, Paul maintained.

Later, the dignitaries including former Union Minister Kabindra Purakayastha gave away the awards to the puja committees. As many as eight Puja committees who won awards were grouped in four categories (two committees in each category) including awareness, cleanliness, plastic-free and best practices puja pandals.
