UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award to Prof Ganesh N Devy

KOKRAJHAR, June 28 - The 14th UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award, 2017 will be conferred on renowned educationist Prof Ganesh N Devy at a function to be held at Guwahati tomorrow. The decision was taken in a meeting of the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) which was held recently at Kokrajhar, Dr Subung Basumatary, chairman of the Trust informed informed.

The UNBT has decided to confer this prestigious award on Prof Ganesh N Devy for his immense contribution towards languages of the tribes in India besides his relentless pursuit for protection, preservation and development of tribal languages and specially on languages of the denotified tribes which has earned him laurels� across the globe, Basumatary said.

The UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award is presented annually to a person who has an immense contribution towards the development of the downtrodden people and humanism. The award consists of a memento, citation, cash, shawl and a traditional aronai.

It may be mentioned here that Prof Ganesh N Devy was born on August 1, 1950. A former professor of English at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, a renowned literary critic and activist he is the founder director of the Bhasha Research Publication Center, Vadodara and Adivasi Academy at Tejgadh, Gujarat, established to create a unique educational environment for the study of the languages of tribal communities. He was educated at Shivaji University, Kolhapur and the University of Leeds, UK.

It may be further mentioned here that Prof Ganesh N Devy has also received some prestigious awards like the Padma Shri on January 26, 2014, Sahitya Akademi Award, SAARC Writers Foundation Award, Prince Claus Award etc.
