UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award 2019 conferred on Brajendra Kumar Brahma

KOKRAJHAR, Oct 27 - The UN Brahma Trust (UNBT) has conferred the 16th Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity Award 2019 upon renowned Bodo literatteur and former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Brajendra Kumar Brahma for his immense and untiring contributions to the downtrodden Bodo community and literary works across languages in the State. Brahma was honoured at a simple function on Saturday which was held at the Bodofa House, Bagansali in Kokrajhar.

The award was presented in presence of Prof Laishram Ladu Sing, Vice Chancellor, Bodoland University, Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Toren Boro, former Rajya Sabha MP and founder of UNB Trust, UG Brahma, Dr Subung Basumatary, chairman of UNB Trust, ABSU president Promod Boro among others. Retired Principal of Kokrajhar Govt College, Surat Narzary presided over the function.

Brajendra Kumar Brahma could not attend the function as he is now undergoing treatment and is admitted at a private nursing home at Siliguri in West Bengal. However, his wife Kaushalya Brahma received the prestigious award on his behalf. The award consists of a memento, citation, Rs 1 lakh in cash, shawl and a traditional aronai.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Prof Laishram Ladu Sing, said that Brajendra Kumar Brahma is a very devoted person in the field of Bodo literature who has dedicated his whole life for the improvement of Bodo literature.

Addressing the gathering, Bodo Sahitya Sabha president Toren Boro thanked the UNB Trust for selecting the right person for this prestigious award. Former Rajya Sabha MP, UG Brahma recalled the contribution of UN Brahma and urged the people to follow the path shown by him.

Dr Subung Basumatary, chairman of UNB Trust said that Brajendra Kumar Brahma was chosen for this award for his outstanding contribution to the downtrodden Bodo community in his literary works across the State. It may be mentioned here that Brajendra Kumar Brahma has also received some prestigious awards for his outstanding contribution to the society like the Someswari Brahma literary award, Muktharam Brahma Thunlaiari Bota, Baidi Dengkhw Baidi Gab award, Sahitya Akademi Award, Promod Ch. Brahma Thunlaiari award, Braban Borgayary Thunlaiari award, Tagore Literary Award etc.

Brajendra Kumar Brahma was born on June 1, 1943 at Chalani Batabari village of Kokrajhar district and presently resides at Kokrajhar town, Bagansali. He retired as a teacher. He is an active social worker and has held various positions in different literary publications and became the president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha from 2002 to 2008.
