Umiam reservoir full, water likely to be discharged

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Aug 20 - Due to incessant rains in the past few days, the Umiam reservoir has risen to 3204.28 feet and would need opening of the sluice gates if rainfall continues, officials warned here today.

The water level has risen by 21 feet in the past couple of days due to rains and if the rainfall continues in the catchment area of Umiam Dam, the reservoir may become full which will necessitate opening of the Dams sluice gates to allow water to pass through. The maximum height of the dam is 3,220 feet.

The Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited has warned the residents living downstream not to engage in any activity near the banks of the Umiam river. Officials also said efforts would be taken to regulate minimal discharge of water through the dam.
