Ultras kidnap officer from Williamnagar

By Correspondent

TURA, Oct 1 Suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants daringly entered Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills district and whisked away the District Transport Officer and his driver from his official residence on Thursday night.

A group of five militants brandishing an AK-47 rifle and a pistol entered the official quarters of the DTO, R Syngkon, around 8.30 pm and forcibly took him and his driver away at gunpoint.

The militants drove away with their captives in the personal vehicle of the DTO a Mahindra Scorpio.

They took them upto Dawagre village, 9 kms from Williamnagar and entered a dirt road leading to a stone quarry where they abandoned the Scorpio and disappeared with the captives. Police have retrieved the DTOs vehicle.

The district police were completely unaware of the kidnapping until the officers cook went to the police station and informed them of the matter this morning.

Highly placed sources reveal that the DTO was served with a demand note by the GNLA several weeks ago and police were in the know of the development.
