GUWAHATI, June 20 Police and security forces have been put on alert after receiving an input that the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) may try to indulge in acts of violence in the city during the Ambubachi.
City Police Commissioner Mukesh Agarwala said, the police has input that the ULFA(I) might launch an attack here, particularly in the Kamakhya area during the Ambubachi. Therefore, all the forces have been put on alert, he said.
Agarwala said that an attempt by the ULFA(I) to trigger an explosion was foiled with the arrest of a hardcore militant and recovery of a powerful improvised explosive device (IED).
He said Dipak Rabha, a hardcore member of the ULFA(I) was arrested last night and following his questioning, an IED was recovered in the Dharapur area here this morning. Dipak was entrusted with planting the IED in the city. Dipak was earlier arrested by police in February while he was trying to extort money and was later released on bail.
Agarwala said that with around 10 lakh devotees expected to visit Kamakhya during the Ambubachi Mela, it would not be possible to frisk each of them, but all possible security measures have been taken and additional forces have been deployed.
Area dominance in the hills is going on, while a close watch is being maintained in all the roads including the foot tracks leading to the Kamakhya temple.
