TURA, June 24 � An under trial prisoner of the United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) cadre managed to give the slip to the police team of WGH and escaped right from under their noses. The incident happened at the Tura Civil Hospital yesterday when he was being taken for medical check-up following complains of diarrhea.
The cadre identified as Rex Miller R. Sangma was arrested on June 18 from Kharkutta in North Garo Hills, based on inputs given by another cadre Grikseng Sangma, who was arrested from his house in the Araimile locality here in Tura. Both of them were arrested in weapons smuggling charges. However, Rex Miller was undergoing treatment at the Tura Civil Hospital. Both of them were on a five day police remand since 20th of June.
Additional SP of West Garo Hills, Bruno A Sangma said, �We have suspended seven constables, who were on duty at the hospital for negligence of duty. Rex Miller was an arm supplier for UALA. He was on
a five-day police remand�.
The WGH police is on a hunt for the escaped convict.
�Rex Miller had complained of loose motion, so he was taken to the hospital. We have asked the hospital to submit a report as to why he was kept so long. We are awaiting the report�, said Sangma.
According to hospital authorities, the cadre was found running towards an exit point. Quoting hospital authorities, the additional SP said, �The cadre was found running, when a sister managed to see him, she informed the constable at the hospital. However, they could not manage to catch him�.
The incident took place around 4 am today. �A departmental enquiry will be initiated against the constables, who were on duty today�, added Sangma stating that seven of the constables on duty were suspended. An investigation into the matter would follow�.
The cadre was not handcuffed, which is a not permitted as per latest Supreme Court ruling on under trial prisoner, who are on medication at hospitals.
