ULFA(I) cadre killed in East Garo Hills

By Correspondent

TURA, April 7 A suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) cadre was killed in an encounter with security personnel near Nokrek Peak in the Durama Hills.

The encounter, which happened at about 2:30 pm today, also led to the busting of a major training camp, though only few arms and ammunition could be recovered from there.

According to East Garo Hills police sources, the camp was raided based on information of the presence of a major composite training camp of the ULFA(I) and the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

The offensive was started yesterday after we got information of the presence of a camp near Nokrek Peak. According to our information, about 70 cadres of the two outfits were being trained in the camp. In the crossfire between the militants and our team, one cadre was killed, said East Garo Hills SP Davies Marak.

From the looks of the killed cadre, we suspect him to be a cadre of the ULFA(I) outfit though there is no identification on him. We also believe that quite a few cadres were injured as there were a number of blood trials on the ground. However no more body was recovered though search is going on, added Marak.

It was a major training camp of the two outfits, the EGH police chief said.

The police recovered a pistol, an air gun and an IED from the spot, along with ration and supplies meant for the cadres being trained.
