ULFA seeks probe into Maibang violence

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 - The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has demanded a judicial probe into the incidents of violence at Maibang in Dima Hasao so that the people responsible for violence and death of two persons can be brought to book.

ULFA general secretary Anup Chetia, who visited the affected areas yesterday along with senior leaders of different organisations, including Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, Dimasa Students Union, Karbi Students Union, etc., said that only a judicial probe would be able to unearth the real reasons for the unfortunate incidents.

He said that a judicial probe would be able to unearth whether there was any conspiracy as the entire incident started with a reported comment of an RSS leader, which appeared in a section of the media although the comment was later denied by the RSS and ruling party.

Chetia said that during the visit, they had spoken to the agitators and found that in the morning of January 25, the local administration had talks with the protesters, who assured to withdraw the rail blockade at 5 pm. At around 2:30 pm, the deputy commissioner visited Maibang and some people might have instigated a section of the crowd when the leaders of the agitators started talking with the official.

The organisers of the rail blockade were caught off guard, but they felt that instead of ordering the police to open fire, the deputy commissioner could have ordered the forces to bring the situation by other means like use of tear gas.

Chetia said that as the people are not happy with the deputy commissioner, he should be transferred immediately. Representatives of different national organisations should also visit the district to reassure the Dimasa people that people of the entire State are with them.
