ULFA-I cadre held by Arunachal police

ITANAGAR, Nov 17 - A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Arunachal Pradesh police has arrested an ULFA-I cadre on charges of extorting money from high-profile politicians of North East, including Arunachal Pradesh.

The team comprising inspectors N LaIi and P Nikang, and led by SP (SIT) Dr Navdeep Singh Brar arrested Ranjan Bikash Borgohain alias Ramen Barua, a resident of Sukapha Nagar in Moranhat of Dibrugarh district, from the outskirts Guwahati on Thursday evening, said a communique from State police headquarters here today.

The accused is a self-styled senior commander of the outfit.

Police recovered extortion notes addressed to politicians of different parties on the outfit�s letterheads bearing signatures of ULFA-I deputy commander-in-chief Drishti Rajkhowa. Two diaries having personal details like addresses, phone numbers, etc, of prominent political figures, five debit/credit cards of various banks, and three mobile phones were also seized from him.

A case (number 8/2019) was registered under Sections 384, 385, 506, 511 of the IPC and Section 10 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 at the SIT CB police station.

The accused was tracked down and arrested following sustained effort and raids carried out in Delhi, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati over a period of one month. He was produced at the court and remanded in seven-day police custody.

During interrogation, he revealed that he was earlier arrested by Delhi police for threatening and extortion, and was lodged in Tihar Jail.

His had joined ULFA-I in 1985. He was also carrying out recruitments for the outfit.

Further investigation is in progress, the communique said.
