Ukhrul accords warm welcome to Manipur Chief Minister

UKHRUL, April 11 - Manipur�s first BJP Chief Minister, N Biren Singh was accorded a warm welcome by a large number of people during his maiden visit after becoming the CM, to Ukhrul district on Tuesday.

The CM and his entourage were also given a rousing welcome by the people at Yaingangpokpi, Litan, Nungsangkhong and Lambui by erecting welcome gates, before reaching the main reception venue at Ukhrul town on Tuesday.

In his address, Singh declared that 10th of every month will be fixed for his personal meeting with village chiefs and leaders of hill-based civil society organisations.

�How can we run a government without people, so I will meet village chiefs and leaders of hill-based civil society orgnisations on 10th of every month,� he said. On Sunday, he had announced that his government plans to observe 15th of every month as �Meeyamgi Numit�(People�s Day) to provide the public an easy access to the elected representatives and top bureaucrats to lodge their complaints and and air their grievances.

Earlier, he had also announced that his Cabinet meetings will also be held at the hill district headquarters.

Stating that his visit is part of an effort to bridge communication gap between the communities, he announced Rs 201 crore worth developmental projects including a women�s market, road construction, water supply scheme, a hall, housing scheme, etc., for Ukhrul.

He assured all possible help in organising Shirui Lily festival as a State level annual festival from next month. Seeking revival the Shirui Lily cup as a State level football tourney, the then national level footballer said, �I miss this ground. I used to play football here (Tangkhul Naga Long ground in Ukhrul) decades ago.�
