Ugratara Devalaya refutes anomalies charge

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 25 - A public meeting held in the campus of the Ugratara Devalaya in Uzanbazar-Latasil area of the city has denied all the charges of financial anomalies by the temple management committee arguing that financial records of the temple are transparent and well maintained.

The meeting, also attended by the temple management committee office-bearers, said that legal action should be taken against persons trying to tarnish the image of the committee.

The Ugratara Devalaya is one among the sacred Shakti shrines in the country. Legends have it that Goddess Satis navel is related to the shrine. Ahom king Shiva Singha built a temple on the site.

The allegations of financial anomalies against the committee are totally baseless as the general body meeting of the committee is held every year where the internal financial assessment report is made public, before presenting it to the District Judge, who looks after all matters related to the Devalaya, said Ajit Das, convener of the meeting.

It was also stressed in the meeting that since the secretary is not entrusted with any financial power, the question of unknown financial transaction does not arise. Advocate Bijan Mahajan also addressed the meeting.

The resolutions adopted in the meeting included legal recourse against the persons involved in the malicious campaign against the temples management, approaching the District Judge for taking action to ascertain the truth behind the allegations of financial anomalies, etc.

The temple management committee on the other hand, clarified that other than the money spent on several developmental works, the committee has fixed deposit worth Rs 10 lakh and a sum of Rs 8 lakh in its savings account.
