TURA, Oct 27 - United Democratic Party (UDP) today decided to give more autonomy to the Garo Hills unit of the party. The decision was taken at its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting held at Bangsi Apal village in North Garo Hills on Saturday.

The meeting was attended by Meghalaya Speaker and president of UDP, Dr Donkupar Roy, working president, BM Lanong, general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh, Ministers Kyrmen Shylla, Metbah Lyngdoh, SK Sunn and Samuel M Sangma, MLA. Sangma has pledged his support to UDP and was welcomed to the party.

Leaders of UDP Garo Hills unit present in the meeting today included former MLAs, BG Momin, president, EK Sangma and LC Momin.

The discussion mainly centered around the question of strengthening the party in Garo Hills where it is mostly seen as a Khasi Hills-based party.

We are called United Democratic Party and not Khasi Democratic Party. This is the oldest regional party in the State and dates back to the State movement. In fact, our first president was Capt Williamson Sangma, said new entrant in UDP, EK Sangma, who joined the party today.
