Two rhino calves translocated from Kaziranga to Manas

KAZIRANGA, Jan 22 - Two rhino calves, a male and a female aged above two years, which were under the care and treatment of the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) under the Wildlife Trust of India at Kaziranga were translocated to Manas National Park on Monday to replenish the population there.

According to official sources, the rhinos were rescued from the western range of Bagori under Kaziranga National Park in July 2016 during the devastating flood . The calves had been taken care of at CWRC, Kaziranga during the initial stage after being rescued from Bagori.

The rhino calves which were on their way to Manas were being accompanied by two veterinary doctors, viz Dr Bhaskar Choudhary and Dr Samsur Ali from WTI in order to monitor their health status.

In 2017, three rhinos had been translocated to the State Zoo at Guwahati.

Sources added that the governing body of CWRC headed by the Director of Kaziranga National Park is officially authorised to take a final decision on any translocation of rhinos from CWRC in consultation with the State Forest Department.
