By SANJOY RAY

GUWAHATI, March 20 One of the two most wanted frauds of the country, booked recently by the Delhi Police for allegedly cheating people of crores of rupees under the fake banner of Prime Ministers Office (PMO), is being brought to Guwahati by the Assam Polices Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The duo had cheated hundreds of people in different parts of the county, including Delhi and Assam, of several crores of rupees by promising benefits under various government schemes.

Sources said that one of the two accused had collected several crores of rupees from Assam in the name of providing benefits, mostly to the poor and middle class people. The other had already been brought to Guwahati.

The duo had posted several schemes in the fake website of the Prime Ministers Office, wherein they had sought applications from possible beneficiaries. After receiving the details, the accused would contact them and collect money promising them benefits.

The victims included people from almost all the districts of Assam.

A team of CID is camping in New Delhi to take custody of the other accused from Delhi Police.

The duo Sudipta Chatterjee and Snehendu Jana hails from West Bengal and had executed similar offences in West Bengal and adjoining States.

Sources said that police across the country were looking out for the duo and the Delhi Police caught hold of them only recently.

Assam Police sources said that it is being probed whether other persons were also involved.

Police said that the second accused will be soon brought to Guwahati next week.
