Two-day AJP meet from today

By R DUTTA CHOUDHURY

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - Newly formed regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) will get a final shape during the two-day conference of the party to be held in Sivasagar tomorrow. Former All Assam Students Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi is set to start his political career by joining the AJP during the conference, while, senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and legislator Pabindra Deka is also likely to join the AJP.

The first day of the twoday conference will be limited to discussion on various issues concerning the people of the State. Prominent personalities from different walks of life as well as nonpolitical organizations and regional political parties barring the AGP have been invited to participate in the discussion.

AJP sources said that different organizations have been requested to submit concept papers on various issues concerning the people and the suggestions offered would be included in the road map to be prepared by the party.

Only an ad hoc body is now running the AJP and the formal central committee of the party will be formed on the second day of the conference. After the formation of the central committee, district units will be formally formed.

Meanwhile, talking to The Assam Tribune, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who recently relinquished the charge of AASU general secretary, said that he has decided to join the AJP to work for the people of Assam. He asserted that he would not betray the people as was done by a few former AASU leaders, who forgot their promises after becoming ministers and legislators.

Replying to a question on how the people can be reassured that he would not betray them after joining active politics, Gogoi said, If I wanted only political power, I could have joined any established political party. I could also have tried to take over the post of president of the AASU. But I decided to take the challenge of joining a newly formed political party only in the interest of serving the people of the State, he added. He also claimed that he would not compromise on his ideology.

Gogoi also said that the people of the State would keep a close watch on his activities as a politician and would not pardon him if he betrays the trust of the people.

It may be mentioned here that the AJP was formed following the suggestions given by the committee of prominent personalities of the State, which was formed by the AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) to suggest measures for dealing with the crucial issues concerning the people. However, the leaders of the AASU have asserted that the students body would maintain its apolitical character and if any member of the AASU wants to join the AJP, he or she would have to resign from the students body.
