DOOMDOOMA, May 13 - Two children were killed and over 50 villages under Doomdooma Revenue Circle of Tinsukia district were badly affected by a devastating storm that came on Sunday evening.
According to official reports received from the Doomdooma Revenue Circle office, Jonathan Hassa (12) and Sushil Hassa (6), sons of Late Luthar Hassa of Dangari Chiring Gaon under Saikhowa mouza of Doomdooma Revenue Circle were killed instantly when a big tree fell on their house during the storm. The mother of the deceased Seteng Hassa and sister Dipali Hassa were critically injured. The government will pay an ex-gratia of Rs 4,00,000/- each to the kin of the deceased, informed the Circle Officer of Doomdooma Revenue Circle.
Over 50 villages under Doomdooma Revenue Circle were badly affected by the storm. Talap, Dangari, Dholla, Kakopothar, Dirak and Phillobari were the worst-affected areas. According to an official report, over 1200 dwelling houses were damaged either partly or fully in the storm. The residence of Nowantik Urang, the Doomdooma correspondent of the satellite news channel DY365 situated at No. 3 Bormurah village, Saikhowa was completely damaged as a big tree fell on it. The scribe and his family had a providential escape. The journalist fraternity of Doomdooma has decided to stand by him and provide him all possible help. The Doomdooma Press Club has decided to give him a cash amount from the club immediately.
Big trees were uprooted and in many places, the roads remained blocked till the filing of this report. Several vehicles were also reported to have been damaged as trees fell on them. Many domestic animals were also reportedly killed due to the falling of trees. Several people at different regions of the circle also sustained injuries.
The pandal of the Bahuwa Dance Festival - 2019 to be held today at the playground of Dangari HS School organised by Directorate of Cultural Affairs and Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council in collaboration with Tinsukia district administration was blown away by the storm. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was supposed to attend this programme today but it was cancelled due to this natural calamity. Sadiya MLA Bolin Chetia today visited the house of the deceased and also the other affected areas to take stock of the situation.
