DIBRUGARH, Nov 9 - A herd of elephants, numbering over 50, last night destroyed several tracts of standing paddy crops in Sessa Nagaon, Gorudharia village under Dibrugarh West Revenue Circle.
The panic stricken nearby villagers informed the forest personnel but the concerned department did not take action. Over 200 bighas of some 17 farmers of the area got destroyed, Utpal Dehingia, a local leader informed.
The forest personnel today rushed to the area with fire crackers and kerosene to ward off the herd after the affected farmers lodged complaint with the Deputy Commissioner. The elephant depredation in the area is almost perennial.
