Tug of war over Ganeshguri market

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 15 - Tussle for control over the municipal market at Ganeshguri intensified today, with a section of traders shutting their shops for two hours in the morning in protest against the decision of another group to form a new executive committee.

The traders observed the shutdown protesting the convening of a meeting yesterday in which a new executive committee was selected under the presidentship of Nikhil Thakuria. Yesterdays meeting was also attended by Dispur MLA Atul Bora.

Today, however, the old committee, which was chosen a year back, declared yesterdays meeting as illegal and threatened legal action against the organisers.

The old committee has not been dissolved yet. The manner in which the new committee was selected is totally illegal and undemocratic. Today we held a meeting in which a majority of the traders reposed faith in the existing committee, the old committees president Md Azam Ali said, charging unscrupulous elements who had indulged in massive financial anomalies during the tenure of the previous committee for the unrest prevailing in the market for the last few weeks.

Another executive member of the old committee also expressed regret over the presence of Dispur MLA Atul Bora in yesterdays meeting. The market does not fall under Dispur LAC. We are surprised by the presence of Atul Bora in the meeting. We dont know, however, under what circumstances he attended it, said another executive member of the old committee.

However, the rival group accused Ali of running the committee in an autocratic manner. He doesnt listen to anyone. We have been demanding holding of the meeting of the committee, but he has not paid heed to the demand. So we were forced to convene the meeting yesterday, they said.

There are some 200 traders in the municipal market.
