TU yet to honour HC verdict

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 18 - The Tezpur University is yet to issue fresh advertisement for the post of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science despite the Gauhati High Court directing it to complete the process within three months from the date of passing the order on March 5.

Dr Linee Goswami, who is the petitioner, had challenged the appointment of Dr Pratibha Deka for the post of Assistant Professor, after the post got vacated following the resignation of Dr Manish Kumar.

The petitioner, in her writ petition, challenged the appointment citing that Dr Deka belongs to SC category while the post vacated by Dr Manish Kumar was not reserved (General).

Further, the appointment also amounts to violation of the Article 14/16 of the Constitution of India, said the petitioner.

The Court after hearing both the sides had set aside the appointment and directed the University to issue fresh advertisement within three months. The timeline ended on June 5 since the order was passed on March 5.

When contacted, Registrar of the Tezpur University, Dr Biren Das, said that the fresh advertisement could not be issued due to election (Lok Sabha polls) code of conduct and we are going to inform the Court about it through our lawyers.

The University usually does not advertise for one post. Now that the election is over, we are soon going to advertise for around 65 posts together.
