TSR assistant commandant nabbed

AGARTALA, Nov 13 - In a major development, the CBI today arrested the Assistant Commandant of the 3rd Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Swrupananda Biswas, in connection with the sensational murder case of journalist Sudip Datta Bhoumik.

Bhoumik, who was associated with a vernacular media house, was murdered at the headquarters of the TSR battalion located in RK Nagar under the Jirania subdivision of West Tripura on November 21, 2017.

Soon after the murder, the erstwhile Left Front Government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case even as the then Opposition party, BJP, and the media fraternity demanded a CBI probe.

The SIT headed by DIG Arindam Nath apprehended four persons, including TSR Commandant Tapan Debbarma. Debbarma and the three others are still in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, after the BJP-IPFT combine came to power in the State, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb ordered a CBI inquiry into the case as per the poll promise of the BJP.

A ten-member CBI team has been investigating the sensational murder case after its arrival here recently. As part of the investigation process, the CBI team apprehended Biswas today. Sources said that the arrested assistant commandant would be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of West Tripura tomorrow.
