JORABAT, Oct 19 - Four trucks transporting cattle were seized late last night near the toll gate at Sonapur on National Highway-37 for flouting several norms relating to transportation of cattle.
The trucks (UP 80DT 4150, AS 02CC 3519, AS 01LC 3593 and AS 07C 6851) were coming from the upper Assam carrying about 71 cows and bulls and were on their way to the cattle market at 9th Mile near Jorabat in Meghalaya.
Sources said that normally about eight bovines are allowed to be transported in a big truck. Hence, questions are being raised as to how such a large number of cattle were allowed to be transported in four trucks, as the number was far above the permissible limit.
Conscious people of the area have asked the departments concerned with issuing or checking transportation permits and livestock permits, to act against this illegal business instead of allowing it to flourish.
