Truck seized, driver held

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 3 - The Sonapur police last late night seized a truck at the Digaru checkpost carrying cattle illegally from Samaguri in Nagaon district and arrested its driver Jamaal Ali (25).

The 12-wheeler truck (AS 01JC 9744) was carrying 16 cattle and heading towards Siliguri, sources said. The driver failed to present relevant documents for the cattle as well as the truck.

Though cattle smuggling is illegal and believed to be a dangerous trade, yet its highly profitable nature has always helped it to grow in the State.

Reports of seizure of trucks used in cattle smuggling appear almost every day, yet the trade has not ceased to flourish. Many such trucks have been seized by the Jorabat, Sonapur and Khetri police in the past few months. Almost every cattle-laden truck seems to get away unhindered by the police, and the cattle are smuggled to Bangladesh.

The conscious section of society has expressed concern over the cattle smuggling syndicate, as it is flourishing even after the Chief Ministers intervention and direction for closure of the syndicate.
