AGARTALA, Sept 13 - Tripura witnessed the highest single-day COVID deaths with 12 people losing their lives to the disease in the past 24 hours.

With 12 fresh fatalities, the number of COVID toll has climbed to 194, which is the second highest in the Northeast.

Transmission of COVID-19 is continuing unabated in the State with 619 new positive cases detected in the last 24 hours.

As many as 4,152 samples were tested today, of which 619 turned out to be positive. The States positivity rate has gone up to 5.64 per cent due to the new infections. At least 110 deaths and over 7,000 positive cases have been reported from West Tripura district alone, which includes State capital Agartala.

Till date, the State has 6,952 active cases while 11,131 COVID patients have recovered. The recovery rate now stands at 60.89 percent.

In order to control the spread of the infection, the government has strengthened the surveillance and control measures.

The GBP hospital authority had constituted a high-level committee to conduct an inquiry into the alleged disruption in oxygen supply to one of the COVID wards of the hospital on Friday night, said MP Pratima Bhoumik.

She said it could be a conspiracy because all was well till 11.30 pm with PSI level 53 percent. Suddenly, the oxygen supply stopped in one of the COVID wards (on the third floor of the NTH building). It appears that the lever of the pipeline was pulled down by somebody, blocking the normal supply of oxygen leading to a chaotic situation, she said.

She suspected that it could be an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the GBP hospital.

District Magistrate, West, Dr Sailesh Kumar Yadav today said 11 wards of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) have been identified as COVID hotspots.

Dr Yadav further said the State government has decided to procure 200 re-breathing masks on an emergency basis.

These masks will be provided to COVID patients undergoing treatment at the GBP hospital. The re-breathing masks supply oxygen to the patients in case of any unforeseen development, he added.
