Tripura varsity plunges into crisis as 2 top officials resign

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, June 20 - In a new twist to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Tripura Central University (TCU), the acting Registrar KB Jamatia and Controller of Examinations Kashinath Jena tendered their letters of resignation consecutively within an hour-and-a-half.

Even though the reason for their resignations was not disclosed by the two incumbents, sources in the TCU confirmed that the duo had resigned from their posts in protest against the alleged arbitrary and autocratic behaviour of Vice Chancellor Dr BLR Dharukar.

Recently, the VC had issued show-cause notices to acting Registrar KB Jamatia and Finance Officer Uttam Kumar Das for violation of order passed by the Election Commission regarding the failure of Professor Sangram Sinha to perform his duties as Micro Observer during the Lok Sabha elections.

Even though Das has stuck to his position as Finance Officer, KB Jamatia took the matter to heart and submitted his resignation on Wednesday, followed within an hour by the resignation of Controller of Examination Dr Kashinath Jena. The twin resignations as well as other controversies dogging the administration have created unrest in the varsity.

Allegedly, Dr Dharukar is trying to rehabilitate outsiders in the varsity by victimising the locals. Sources, however, said that there is intense groupism in the varsity and the showcause notices issued by the VC are aimed at cutting to size two leaders of the rival groups to enable the VC to have total sway in the administration.

The issuance of the showcause notices and the subsequent developments have, however, sparked tension in the university. Already the academic atmosphere in the varsity is faltering.
