Tripura tribal party to press for NRC exercise in State

AGARTALA, Aug 14 - The tribal-based Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) has decided to press for an NRC in Tripura on the lines of Assam to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people of the State.

INPT president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl and general secretary Jagadish Debbarma will go to Delhi on August 21 to meet officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

�In course of the meeting, we will highlight the need for an NRC-like exercise in Tripura. We hope the MHA officials will give us a positive response,� said Debbbarma here today.

The party will also raise the issue of empowerment of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council in the meeting.

Apart from the meeting with MHA officials, INPT leaders will attend a hearing in the Supreme Court on a writ petition seeking the NRC in Tripura. The petition, which is scheduled to be heard by the apex court on August 23, was filed by Patal Kayna Tripura, a leader of the Tripura People�s Party.
