Tripura tribal council polls deferred

AGARTALA, March 26 - Elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) have been deferred indefinitely due to the current situation arising out of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the entire country.

Keeping all aspects of the pandemic situation in mind, the State Government has decided to defer elections to the TTAADC till further notice, said N Darling, Secretary of Tribal Welfare, in a notification issued here today.

The situation is grim with the nationwide lockdown for 21 days declared by the Central Government to prevent spread of COVID-19, the notification stated. Besides, social distancing has to be maintained.

As per the earlier schedule, elections to the TTAADC were scheduled by May 17 after the completion of the present council�s tenure. With today�s notification, preparations for issue of the final electoral roll have been stopped.
