Tripura tops, Assam 27th in MGNREGA

AGARTALA, April 13 � Tripura has once again been recognised as the best performing State in the entire country in implementation of MGNREGA during 2010-11 financial year.

The State has bagged the first position by way of generating 54.74 mandays under the national flagship programme which is below that of previous year � 80 mandays, according to a report prepared by the Ministry of Rural Development (RD).

While Andhra Pradesh has secured the second position with 46.63 mandays, Orissa finished third with 44.64 mandays and Assam stood 27th with 23.57 mandays.

Not only in terms of job creation, Tripura has registered splendid success in utilizing fund. Of the total available money, the state has managed to spend 99.2 percent during the last financial year.

Talking to reporters at Civil Secretariat here on Wednesday, RD Minister Jitendra Chowdhury said that despite various obstacles, the state has managed to regain its top position in MGNREGA implementation in the entire country.

He said that the Centre has approved a labour budget of Rs. 1049.00 crore of which the state has actually received only Rs. 638.77 crore in the last financial year (2010-11). �The Centre has deprived the state by way of releasing less money- Rs. 411 crore�, he said.

Chowdhury said the Centre has approved labour budget of Rs. 5 crore mandays for the current financial year (2011-12) and of which Rs. 146.21 crore has been released. �The state is suppose to get Rs. 1042 crore to create 5 crore mandays for 6 lakh job holders�, he said.

Chowdhury also admitted that there has been a tendency of misusing the MGNREGA outlay when it comes to output. �To ensure output of the national flagship programme , the state government has decided to constitute district wise committee to monitor the way it is carrying out�, he said adding that they would be empowered to conduct hearing on any complaint and take necessary measures.

According to the reports, altogether 5.57 lakh jobs were demanded in the last financial year and 5.56 lakh families have got job under the national flagship programme. A total of 76614 job cardholders have got hundred-day mandays in the 2010-11 financial year.

Under the MGNREGA, a total of 4250 flood controlled projects had been implemented while 63489 water harvesting projects have been executed during the 2010-11 financial year.
