Tripura rail track inspection today

By CORRESPONDENT

AGARTALA, Aug 26 - The much-awaited CRS (Commissioner of Railway Safety) inspection of the newly-laid BG rail track from Belona to Sabroom in Tripura will be carried out on Tuesday, official sources said.

CRS Sailesh Kumar Yadav had noticed some shortcomings on certain portions of the 39-km BG track during an inspection carried out by him on July 31. In his report, Yadav recommended rectification of the shortcomings.

Based on his report, the NFR carried out the repairs, which will be followed by a fresh CRS inspection on Tuesday. It is now final that the CRS inspection will be done on August 27 and we are ready for it. If the CRS gives his clearance, then passenger train service will start from Agartala to Sabroom via Belonia soon, a NFR official said here on Monday.

In a meeting held recently, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb requested the NFR officials to introduce passenger train service up to Sabroom before Durga Puja, which will be starting on October 5.

The rail connectivity up to Sabroom, the States southernmost sub-division bordering Bangladesh is considered strategically important because of its proximity to Chittagong.

Since the Maitree Setu, which is being constructed over the Feni river to connect Sabroom with Chittagong port, will be completed by the end of next year, the State Government wants to make it a corridor for transportation of goods between Bangladesh and the Northeast region.

The NFR sources said steps have been taken to run local trains on two routes two pairs on Agartala-Sabroom route and one pair on Agartala-Dharmanagar route from the second week of September.

Following a request made by the Chief Minister, Union Railway Minister Pijush Goyal has allocated four pairs of DEMU trains (local trains) to the State, bringing cheer to the people of Tripura.
