Tripura official wanted for embezzlement nabbed

Agartala, Sep 13 (IANS): An employee of Tripura Education Department was arrested from West Bengal on Saturday for embezzling over Rs 4 crore from a Central education scheme, police said.

"We have arrested Tripura Education Department cashier Arnab Chakraborty from Baguihati (in West Bengal's North 24-Parganas district). After taking a transit remand from the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Barasat, we would bring back him to Tripura on Sunday," Tripura police inspector Subrata Chakraborty told IANS over phone from Kolkata.

He said: "After thorough interrogation, Arnab Chakraborty might reveal the entire multi-crore rupee scam and other officials might have been involved in the misappropriation."

Subrata Chakraborty led a three-member police team which went to Kolkata Friday to nab Arnab Chakraborty, who along with his family members was on the run after the state education department filed a case with the police.

Officer-in-charge of West Kotowali police station here Milan Datta told IANS that a first information report was filed Sep 5 by the state education department against Arnab Chakraborty for withdrawing huge amount of money after forging the signature of senior officials.

In the preliminary probe, police found wrongdoings of more than Rs 4 crore sanctioned by the union governemnt's Human Resource Development Ministry under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

Education Department sources said Arnab Chakraborty was dealing with the fund of the RMSA, a centrally sponsored scheme for the expansion of secondary education in public schools.
