Tripura Govt to grant more power to tribal council

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Sept 10 - The BJP-IPFT government has prepared some proposals to grant more power to Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) , Radha Charan Debbarma, the chief executive member of the autonomous body informed.

While replying to a written question by MDC Kumodh Debbarma on the first day of TTAADC session, the CEM said the state government has made some specific proposals for giving more power to the tribal council in order to bring in development .

The proposals included converting TTAADC into Tipraland Autonomous Territorial Council, one-third reservation for women of the 30-member council, introduction of Town Committees in TTAADC area, block level council in place of sub-zonal committee and district level council in lieu of zonal level committee.

After examining the proposals, TTAADC authority has sent its observations/views to the state government, he said .

Debbarma said TTAADC authority has also asked the state government to empower the tribal council by amending 74 section of the Article.

The move is seen politically important because of next years election in the tribal council. Almost all political parties, including BJP, Congress, CPI(M), IPFT and INPT want the Centre to give more power to tribal council so that it could function effectively to meet the indigenous peoples aspirations.

Importantly, the BJP had promised to give more power to TTADC in its vision document before the 2018 Assembly elections. And, IPFT, an ally of BJP-led coalition government has been demanding more power including direct funding to the autonomous council.
