AGARTALA, Jan 10 - In the wake of growing demand for high level inquiry into the Madhabbari firing incident that left six persons injured during a bandh called by NESO opposing The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill -2016 on Tuesday, the Tripura Government on Thursday ordered a Magistrate level probe into the incident.
However, Indigenous People�s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a coalition partner of the State Government, has demanded a judicial inquiry into the firing incident.
The Indigenous National Party of Tripura (INPT), another tribal-based party, has called a 12-hour strike in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) area of the State on Saturday.
�The government has decided to order a magistrate level inquiry into Madhabbari incident and stringent punishment will be given to those who are involved in the incident�, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said at a press conference at the Civil Secretariat here.
Calling the incident as condemnable, the Chief Minister said police had to open fire after bandh supporters went on rampage in public places and started pelting stones at the security forces even after repeated appeals to be calm.
�It appeared the incident � setting shops on fire, stone pelting at security personnel and blockading national highway was aimed at distabilising the peaceful atmosphere in the State�, he pointed out.
One of the injured was referred to RN Tagore Hospital in Kolkata and now he is out of danger, he said, adding that the State Government has been bearing medical expenditure of all the injured persons.
The Chief Minister supported the CAB saying that if The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is not passed, minorities coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan will face trouble. �In Tripura, welcoming of minority people from neighbouring country is not new as lakhs of people of Bangladesh were warmly welcomed in the past�, he said.
Revenue Minister NC Debbarma, who is also the president of IPFT, was present in the press conference.
At a separate press conference, IPFT general secretary Mever Kumar Jamatia, who is also Tribal Welfare Minister of the coalition government, expressed serious concern over the firing on the agitators that resulted in injury of six persons.
�We want the government to order a high level inquiry to be headed by a sitting judge of a High Court to know the reason behind the firing on the bandh supporters�, he said.
